The Calm after the Christmas

What a busy time we've had! Todd's parents stayed for a couple days, so I had to be sociable almost all the time :o) They kept themselves busy, though - cooking, laundry, working on the bar renovations, etc. Sharon and Russ cooked the entire Christmas dinner, so I didn't have to lift a finger. It was kind of strange, not doing anything in my own kitchen, but Todd's sister Doris said to take advantage of it, and let them feed us. We ate like pigs, and still have tons of left-overs! We had more people come in yesterday, so Todd's mom cooked a ham and made tons of salads. Another day of pigging out, and yet more left-overs... Let's not forget the chocolates, cookies, squares, rolls, ice cream, etc. It won't be hard to "maintain my figure" ~heh heh~
Kids all had fun, lots and lots of presents! Caitlyn seemed to handle everything quite well, as long as she was the centre of attention. With so many people here, it got loud, so Caitlyn would yell louder still to make sure she'd be heard. She must get her social genes from Todd's side of the family! Anyway, I got some nice pictures to share - I'll put them up as soon as I can edit out the red eyes! Here is a little teaser...

Once I have the other photos ready, I'll put them in my Yahoo photo album, and add a link for you here.

A Soggy Holiday

Another rainy day on the island. It's probably not going to be a white Christmas here - but that's no surprise, we usually have rain, or fog, or rain and fog! I guess we'll have to put up the lights in the rain... 'cause we still haven't got it done! Shopping isn't done either. Nor is the house cleaning. We don't have a tree yet. Hmmmmm... what else is there not done for Christmas? Oh yeah - everything! We like to leave things to the very last minute, and then freak out completely. Something about working better under pressure... *wink*
We did do one important thing: Caitlyn met Santa. She was as friendly as ever, although she did try to rip off Santa's beard. He was too quick for her, though, and turned her around before she could cause any injury. I don't know if she asked for anything for Christmas, she wouldn't tell me. :o)
Obligatory photo with Santa
P.S. - Tuffysmom: This is just the small version of the photo, for the web. I have a higher resolution version suitable for printing.

Only have a minute, but...

Check this out! I so want to learn how to do this:

Maybe I can use this to challenge the boys to fold their own laundry (or, shirts, at least). They are pretty clever, though - they'd figure out before too long that I am only trying to trick them into doing their own work. ~sigh~

Another First

Big news! Caitlyn has tasted her first "real" food! Ok, maybe the news isn't that big... still, it's exciting to us. She had rice cereal. It sounds (and smells) bland, but I tasted it, and it's actually kinda sweet. She figured out the spoon pretty quickly, and finished off 2 tablespoons of cereal in just a few minutes. Clever girl! Now we can test the theory that she'll start sleeping better at night once she's eating solid food. Personally, I have my doubts... she just loves being with us so much that she hates to go to sleep; I think she's afraid she'll miss something. She'll soon realize that we are actually rather boring, and that sleep might even be more exciting than a night with us. I can always hope, anyway!
Work is progressing in the rec room - walls are all painted, and it's time to rearrange the furniture, set up the dart board, hook up the stereo, connect all the wires for various tv, dvd, playstation, nintendo, etc. That part just might take the longest - there's a lot of wires down there! I'll be taking pictures as soon as Todd brings back my double-A batteries (he took them out of the camera to use in his flashlight, which I cannot find). It's looking nice, though - I am quite happy with it so far.
Well, better get back to the ol' grind - Caitlyn is only good for so long in that automatic swing :)

Long Time, No Blog

Time has a way of sneaking by when you're not looking! Even though it's been more than a week since I last blogged, and I feel like I've been busy, not much has actually been going on around here. Just the usual chores (you know, never-ending laundry, always-dirty dishes, dog hair and dust everywhere). We have been working on the basement/rec room area, but that is taking longer than we had hoped; you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men... Anyway, Eric's room is finished, and he's settled in nicely - got his clothes scattered all over the floor, so I guess that means he feels at home. We are now in the process of painting the pool-table area a nice deep red - it's a bit creepy while you're painting, all that wet, glistening red. But I think it's going to look nice and cozy. Travis wants to get creative, and do some kind of artistic wall treatments, but I'm afraid his idea of creative might clash with mine... I did tell him if he wanted to, I'd get a couple large pieces of canvas for him to work on, and if I like the result, I'll put in up on the wall. We'll see if anything comes of that. Our goal is to have the rec room all done in time for Christmas so that Todd can play pool with his buddies when they come over. We have to get the computer room organized too - we still have boxes of books all over the place, waiting for the bookshelves to be finished. Always so much to do - when am I supposed to lounge around eating bon-bons?!

Christmas plans thus far: Todd's mother debated with herself for a few days, and finally just admitted that she wants to be here for Christmas morning! His sister Doris wanted to be here too, but has other obligations, so she'll be coming in on Boxing Day. I am starting to worry that things might get a little overwhelming... this house is going to be like Grand Central Station! Todd and I have been "discussing" plans for the tree - he likes to go out in the woods and chop down the ugliest, most Charlie Brown-like tree he can find, whereas I prefer to shop for a nice, big, fat Nova Scotia tree. We might end up with two trees this year! Another on-going "discussion" - Christmas dinner. Todd's family likes to have their dinner at about 1pm; I prefer to have it at supper time, say, around 6pm. Since his mother is going to be here, and she likes to cook when she's here, I am not sure how that's going to work out. Todd says he can eat dinner at 6pm, and that since this is my house, I can have it when I want it... I'll have to keep you posted on the outcome of that one.

Anyway, I hear the dulcet tones of my darling Caitlyn calling from the bedroom - time to go feed the belly, I mean baby!

A Fine Remembrance Day

We were up bright and early this morning to get Jamie ready for the Remembrance Day parade downtown. It was a gorgeous morning, sun shining, reasonably warm. There was a strong breeze coming in from the harbour, but the sun was warm enough to make it tolerable. Todd, Travis, Caitlyn and I joined the crowd to observe the service, while Jamie stood on parade with his troop. They all did so well, standing straight and still - it's good that they have such a sense of pride and respect. Jamie really enjoys the parade functions, and takes it pretty seriously. Eric stayed at a friend's house last night, so didn't make it down to the War Memorial. We took a few photos of Jamie in uniform; just click on this photo to go to my photo album for the other pics.
Paying respects
Tonight, Jamie's troop are having a Wake-a-thon. No one is allowed to sleep, upon penalty of humiliation! Last year a couple cadets snuck off to the boys bathroom to try and catch a few Z's, and got doused with cold water while being loudly reprimanded. Why the heck do they find that fun?! I imagine Jamie will be pretty cranky tomorrow...

On a completely different tangent, we have not yet finished Eric's new room. I don't know why, except to say that it seems there's always something else that needs to be done more urgently... We did get the inside of his room painted; now we just need to paint the baseboards and put them in. As for the rec room itself, well... it is an absolute mess right now, and the time pressure is setting in - we want to be done with that in time to get ready for Christmas. It just never ends! ~sigh~

P.S. - See new photos of Caitlyn in my photo album!

Snow?! Noooooo!

No fair - I don't have my winter tires on yet! I don't know where my windshield brushy thingy is! Where are my gloves?! *sob* *sob* Yep, the first snow-fall is here. So it's rather skimpy, and I don't need to shovel, and it will likely be gone by the time I finish my coffee. That's not the point! I am not psychologically prepared for snow. I need time to mentally gird my loins. I have not yet recovered from the trauma of last winter. And I have no idea what happened to the shovels. I am so not like NorthernLight, who was actually happy about their first snowfall. Of course, maybe if I had a skidoo I would be as excited... nah, probably not!
Well, I better get to the grocery store, stock up on cookies and pies for the coming "hibernation" period. Need extra fat to keep warm, you know ;)

By Special Request

Frank has requested a sample of Eric's music, so here we go...

Disclaimer:
Before you hit the "play" button, I should warn you - this music is of the genre "gore/grind", and can be rather... disconcerting ... Don't even try to listen to the lyrics, you might hurt your head. It is possible that this music causes insanity, as well (at least, it does for me after they've practiced in the basement for three hours). That having been said, enjoy! Eric is the guitarist/vocalist, and Ryan is on drums.
Oh, and the radio show went well last night - sounded like Eric was having fun. I listened through the computer, so I wasn't able to record the show at the same time. Eric might be able to get a recording from the show's host, so I can have it for a keepsake :o)

Candy!

Hallowe'en is over, and all that's left is the huge pile of candy... I've already started on those little chocolate bars (the Oh Henry's are gone), the rockets, and the rice krispie squares. We didn't get too many trick-or-treaters, so we have lots of left-overs. Jamie had a pretty good haul, but I imagine there'll be lots of things he doesn't like in his loot-bag. Eric didn't go trick-or-treating, 'cause he is too cool :o) Travis went out with some of his friends, even though he is cool :o) The dogs went bananas every time someone came to the door, which is enough to drive you crazy. Caitlyn fussed and cried and had no interest at all in Hallowe'en. So, now that that's over, time to get ready for Christmas! hehehehehe
Travis, Caitlyn, Jackie, Jay, Adam
In other news, Eric and his friend Ryan will be co-hosting a radio show tonight at Memorial University's radio station CHMR. The two of them have formed a "band" (if you can call two guys a band) called Voreaphilia (look it up - it's gross!), and they've been playing shows around town these last few months. Apparently they're developing a bit of a following. They've made a demo CD, and are selling them at the shows they play. Now, if only Eric could show as much drive in his school work (and house work/chores)!

Girls' Night Out

This weekend is one big party here in town. They call it Mardi Gras, even though it is the wrong time of year, mostly because the downtown closes the "bar street" to traffic. You pay $10 to get on the street, and then can wander from bar to bar like it's one big party. Everyone dresses up for Hallowe'en, and they have contests for the best costumes, etc. It's lots of fun, and you see some pretty creative costumes. Actually, I had forgotten how much fun it is - it's been years since I went down to Mardi Gras... until last night.
Last week Donna asked me to go with her, dressed up, of course. I wasn't too keen, being the anti-social people-phobe that I am. She begged, though, and even managed to use the guilt tactic on me - she said she really wanted to go, and no one else would go with her, we haven't done anything together in ages, blah blah blah. I told Todd, thinking he would maybe discourage me from going out, but he confounded my plan by saying, "Yeah, you need a night out!" So, I tried the "I don't have anything to wear" scheme - no good, Donna would find something for me. Ok, then.... the night before our "date", I said to Todd, "My knees are hurting... maybe I should stay home tomorrow." He threatened to call Donna and have her come over and badger me in person. There was no way out - I was roped in, and feeling anxious. Ah well... sometimes all you can do is admit defeat with what little dignity you have left. Here we are, all dressed up and ready to party on George Street:
Halloween Girls
Of course, Caitlyn didn't come with us, but she did want to dress up for the picture. Anyway, I am so glad that Donna is the pushy broad that she is. She finds ways to make me do things I wouldn't otherwise, and I usually end up having fun. We had a blast, danced the whole night, laughed at all the crazy costumes, ran into old friends, ate at an all-night cafe, and straggled home at 5am (or, 4am, after the time changed). My feet are killing me today, and my voice is hoarse from all the shouting and laughing. That's how you know you had fun! Really, though - I am getting a little too old to this more than once a year... hehehehe

A choice has been made

It only took about 20 minutes of discussion, and Todd and I reached concensus, with neithor blows nor sarcastic remarks exchanged! Boy, we must be really tired... hehehehe So, we have a colour chosen for the rec room - it's called "Cupid's Red" by Sico Paint, and it's a nice rich red/almost burgundy which should look nice with the green felt of the pool table. Hope so, anyway, 'cause we bought three cans of it! We chose a more neutral colour for Eric's room, since he was being difficult, and refused to pick a sensible colour - he asked for pink, thinking it would be amusing. I will not paint his room pink, only to have him say later that he was only kidding. But I digress... Eric's room will be a light kind of brown called "Cigar Box". I think it will look pretty nice... but, I have been wrong before. I have pictures of the rec room as it is now, a dark, blah blue(see the photo) - I'll have to post a comparison when the painting is all done, hopefully by this time next week.
Anyway, I am having trouble posting the little paint chip sample I have, so I will have to try again later. How frustrating!

Update - I can finally upload an image! This is the colour we chose for the rec room:

Ever So Busy

Well, in a weird way, I have been busy. Not much is getting done around the house, but Caitlyn is getting bigger and bigger! I think she is going through a growth spurt - all she wants to do lately is nurse, sometimes almost every hour (even through the night). It doesn't sound like work, but it sure makes me tired! Poor Todd is tired too, since he usually ends up getting out of bed to bring Caitlyn to me. When we finally do fall asleep, we crash completely. The boys unintentionally played hookey today, 'cause no one heard the alarm when it went off this morning. This baby is getting tiring! We can only hope that one day, she will actually sleep through the whole night. That night will be glorious.... *sigh* Anyway, other than our infant-induced insomnia, not much is going on around here. Eric's room is slowly coming together. It will soon be time to paint it. Unfortunately, no one can agree on a new paint colour, so that might slow down production a bit :o) It will be a relief to finally have everything put back where it belongs, though - you can hardly kick your boots through here. Maybe I'll go have a nap, see if the Tidy Fairy visits us!

So... Sudoku?

Just wanted to test this Sudoku thingy I found while surfing. It's supposed to change daily, I think... I have become so addicted that I need more than one a day, though!

I do have a puzzle book, too, but some of them are too hard. For some reason I just don't find much amusement in the really hard ones!

Scary days ahead...

Hallowe'en is coming! Normally I don't do too much for it (actually, what I like to do is turn off all the lights, and hide very quietly - pretending I'm not home because I've already eaten all the candy I bought... twice). Todd, on the other hand, is getting excited. He wants to decorate inside and out, and let kids come in the house to do a tour. Surely we can come to some compromise! I don't want herds of children wandering through my home for hours on end. Wait a second... I have that every day! Now, that's scary! I don't know yet what Eric and Travis are doing for Hallowe'en - they both say they're too old to dress up, but it's not hard to tell that they would love to. Travis is thinking of going to the Harbour Haunt this year. I've never gone, the line up is usually too long for impatient me, but I've heard it's really good. Maybe one day I'll go for it. I think Eric will be playing a show with one of his bands - he would love a recipe for fake blood if anyone has a good one (the last batch we tried came out looking like berry jelly - purple and gelatinous jelly). Jamie can't make up his mind for a costume, which means we'll be scrambling at the last minute, as usual. Todd has already gotten a costume for Caitlyn, since she'll probably be helping to answer the door all night. She had a dress rehearsal just this past weekend:
Pretty Witch
Hey - it's after midnight. I'm Forty Years Old now! I thought I was feeling a little old just then. Wonder if Todd is making me a cake this year. Last year was the first time he ever baked anything. Wasn't that sweet - his first foray into baking was especially for me :o) Look at this gorgeous cake!
Birthday cake
At one point it said "Happy Birthday Michelle"... but then the frosting melted. Now he knows to let the cake cool first. *smirk*

Obsession (not) by Calvin Klein

Well, here it is... my first attempt to really personalize my blog. I'm not sure if I like it yet, so there will probably be modifications, because I am obsessed. With what, you may ask. I answer: with whatever catches my attention at the moment. These days they call that OCD, don't they? No matter; it is just too much fun trying to figure out solutions to design and function problems. Maybe my brain isn't completely used up yet!

Need a proper exclamatory statement...

How about:
Holy cow!
Been so busy lately, it's insane! All I wanna do is play on my computer, but I hardly ever get a chance. Caitlyn is becoming a very demanding little person, always expecting all eyes to be on her. Luckily, she is very cute, and keeping all eyes on her is an easy job. Unluckily, it means that not many other jobs get done around here. Todd's been pretty busy too... he has to build a room in the rec-room area for Eric. Before he can do that, he has to build book shelves so that we can put away all the books we have, to make enough space to build the room. Then, he has to work on a little space we have set aside for Caitlyn's nursery - so far she's been staying in our room (I would say "sleeping" in our room, but she doesn't do as much of that as she should!). He better hurry up, though - his paternity leave ends some time in January!
Ok, that's all I have time for right now - it will soon be time to go get boys from school, and then shopping for a new freezer (a whole story in itself). If I had just a little more energy, you might think I'm whipping around like a tornado. Really, I probably look a little more like dirty sink water slowly spinning my way through a mostly-clogged drain. *sigh*

Just Foolin' Around - Revisited

I have been spending a fair bit of time on my computer lately, but not much of that writing my own blog (just checking out others'). I want to learn to write CSS (cascading style sheets), so that I can create my own templates for blogs. So, as required by my own obsessive nature, I have been feverishly surfing the 'net, looking at other CSS templates (some are really nice!!) and studying at the W3 Schools. Just check out Zen Garden to see what I'm talking about. I don't mean to imply I aspire to their standards, but I sure would like to know how they do it! The only problem is that once a compulsion hits me, I have a real hard time un-focussing - kids and dogs starve, dishes and laundry pile up (more than usual), babies sit in motionless swings waiting for someone to wind them up, my legs grow hairier.... it's just not pretty!
Everyone else here is fine, all doing their own thing - Eric has been jamming quite a bit, getting ready for a big Hallowe'en show, Jamie is at cadets tonight, doing some shooting, Travis is at work (A&W), and Todd is playing guitar for Caitlyn (his captive audience, as it were). For a few minutes, I can do what I want! So, I better get back to it - I got some CSS to practice.

Just Hanging Around

Not much new going on here - which is probably a good thing! Caitlyn is learning to assert herself quite loudly now; she doesn't cry, she yells. If you don't figure out what she wants in a timely manner, she makes sure to express her displeasure at great length, right to your face. It's kind of cute, actually... I suppose it won't be so cute eventually. She is learning to sit up herself, which makes diaper changing an adventure, but she hates spending time on her belly, so I don't know how she'll learn to crawl! Television is becoming more interesting to her, too - we'll have to be careful what's on the family TV from now on. She loves watching TV with her big brother:

A Few Health Questions and Answers

Just thought I'd throw in a quick post with some very helpful health Q&A I've come across. It just may change your life - I know it did for me :o)

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!...Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around themiddle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!
Enjoy life, friends and loved ones - stay healthy :o)

The Great Hunter has Returned!

So, they made it home safely, and with lots of bottled moose. The sausages, roasts and steaks will have to wait 'til next week, when the butcher in Burin is finished with the meat. They all had fun, and seem to have gotten the urge to shoot out of their systems for now. See how happy they are?

Hail the Great Hunters!

Jamie had to get an emergency hair cut today - Cadets are up and running again for the year. His hair is so easy to take care of when he's in cadets... don't even have to comb it! Looks nice, too, in my opinion. I don't think Eric would do well in cadets at all...

One Hairy Eric

Well, gotta go... I downloaded a trial version of Painter Essentials last night, and it needs to be played with. It can turn regular photos into works of art (meaning they look like they have been hand painted). Lots of fun!

Idle hands, and all that

Notice anything different? You should... the last template was, well... um... pink. I decided I wanted something different, but I am not sure where I want to go with it. What do you guys think?

What colour-theme should my blog use?
blues
greens
tans and beiges
grays
reds
pinks
yellows
purples

Anyway, Todd called last night. They have got their moose, and will be heading over to his Dad's place to clean it and cut it up (yuck). Hopefully he'll be home in another day or so. He says he took lots of photos - anyone want to see chopped up dead animal? Not me!! Maybe once we have a nice roast with vegetables and gravy, I will take a picture to show you.

Uh oh - Caitlyn is stirring. Time for me to go again. A Mom's work is never done, you know.

Got to get me moose, b'y

Todd is off to the great Northern Peninsula with his Dad and brother-in-law, for a few days of moose hunting. He was so excited last night, it was like watching a little kid getting ready for a party! He'll only be gone a few days, but he took enough gear to start a small town... well, a small outpost, anyway. He's not the greatest hunter in the world, but he heard there's lots of moose up north... hopefully they'll find a spot like this:

Surely he'd be able to hit at least one?! *Tee hee hee* I hope he does get something, though - I actually like moose meat. Mmmmmmm - moose sausages, bottled moose, roast moose, moose stew, moose steaks.... ~drool~

While he's gone, I think I'll run out to Pier 1 and buy as many tacky nick-nacks as I can, as a welcome home gift for him *mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaa* I need to hit Winners and Costco too. I just love shopping!

Another year begun...

Well, I have a few minutes to myself, so here I am! The boys are in school, and Todd has taken Caitlyn to her appointment to get her 2nd set of needles. I took her last time, and I almost couldn't bear it when she cried - that was the first time I had really heard her cry from pain. Horrible! So, I made Todd take her today. I may have to console both of them when they get back.

Anyway, first full week of school is almost over, and things seem to be going well. Eric and Travis are both pretty happy with their courses. High school here is loosely organized like university; students have to pick 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year courses from a whole catalogue of choices, so their course load is pretty much custom made (aside from the basic required ones, like English, Math, etc.). Eric wanted to take a 3rd year music course, but there weren't enough students, so it was cancelled; he chose business and some kind of career development thing instead, so that might be interesting. Travis' favorite pick so far is an introductory law course... like he needs instruction in arguing!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaa......

Jamie has the same homeroom teacher he had last year, so he'll have a hard time convincing her he should be sent home 'cause he's sick - she has caught on to his cute, eyelash-batting tricks! She seems to be a good teacher, though - easy to get in touch with, and she likes Jamie, so she keeps an interest in what he's doing. Our goal this year is to get through every single week without missing one day of school. He already tried to skip off today, claiming a sore throat, but I girded my loins, and forced him out the door anyway. Hopefully the school will not be calling by lunch time for me to go get him!

I am slowly making my way through all the boxes I packed last winter, finding my stuff and getting this house all home-y. Todd's not a big fan of nick nacks, but I am showing him the error of his ways. His cousin was over not too long ago, and said it wasn't hard to see Todd was living with a woman - he has finally evolved from "early bachelor pad" decorating! Believe it or not, one year, Todd and Travis had decorated their Christmas tree with beer bottles and plastic ornaments from a vodka company. ~sigh~ Yep, they needed me!

I'll leave you with a pic taken last month, in a hotel room in Ottawa. Behold the mighty baby girl who stands with only the slightest assistance from a big brother!

This'n'that

Not a whole lot going on, other than laundry. For some reason, it doesn't matter how many times I fill the washer, I still have more to go. It will never end, I fear! Just when I thought I was nearing the end of the pile, I opened the closet door of the laundry room, and found Travis' secret stash of dirty clothes; apparently he stuffed them there while cleaning his room. *aaaaaargh*

Well, boys will be going back to school on Wednesday. None of them are actually ready... we haven't bought a darn thing :o) Eric and Travis are going into grade 11 and Jamie is starting grade 8. How come everyone is getting older but me? By the way, Jamie now wishes to be addressed as James or Jimmy from now on. I know right now that I will not be able to remember that... he will always be my l'il Jamie :o)

Heard the news about the Crocodile Hunter - I feel for his wife and kids. After all the risks he's taken, it really seems unfair that a stingray would be his undoing. I think if I were her, I would not want to be hearing "oh well, he died doing what he loved"... he shouldn't have died at all. I can't even imagine how hard it would be for someone to have to deal with this in the public eye, either. It's all just so sad.

I better show a photo to make us feel better. Here's Caitlyn and Jamie, admiring each other:

Home again, home again, Jiggity Jig

Whew - it's been forever since I've been able to blog! I have so much to catch up on, I may have to neglect my household responsibilities for a while :o) It's nice to be home again... and the house is still standing (quite a bit messier, but at least still standing). To the best of my knowledge, there have been no fires, no visits by policemen, no crazy parties under Eric's rule. Lots of dog pee, though *ugh*

Anyway, the wedding was nice - Todd's brother Brad is now married to his long-time live-in girlfriend Michlyn

They were married in a big, catholic-churchy affair, in 200-degree-C weather (no air-conditioning), lots of standing, kneeling, sitting, kneeling, standing, etc. Then, the 652 photos afterward, in the burning sun. Then, the huge dinner (the food was really good!), a million toasts, lots of wine. Then, the obligatory dance, with the tacky emcee, silly games, bad music, drunk relatives, crazy dancing, tired kids running around, and so on. Then, the drunken revelry in various hotel rooms, until everybody finally collapsed. Fun, no? Hee hee hee

Caitlyn enjoyed the dance - she loves music, and the lights were fascinating to her. She was pretty darn cute in her party dresses (she had to change the first one after spitting up all over herself, and Todd's suit jacket, incidentally). She was the belle of the ball... after the bride, of course :o)

We did a little bit of site-seeing in Ottawa - not as much as we wanted to, but we did make it to the Museum of Science and Technology, the War Museum, and the Museum of Civilization. Jamie and Travis had a good time at the hotel, in the "water park" - a swimming pool that had a wave-maker and a water slide. We drove a million miles to see Paul and Silvia in Borden, ended up staying two nights. Paul and Todd had fun, but I don't know if Silvia will be wanting us to drop in again any time soon! On the trip home, we stopped in New Brunswick to visit Dad and Dianne, and managed to have a short lunch visit with my Mommy. Final stop was in Cape Breton, for another wedding reception for Brad and Mich - more dancing to bad music while drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. It was fun, though. Sadly, I couldn't get many photos of the trip, because my camera broke just moments before the wedding began! So, I have to wait for others to send me copies of their photos... ~sigh~

Well, gotta get a coffee, and see if Caitlyn is where I left her *ha ha ha* Oh, and I must catch up on all my family's blogs :o)

Just foolin' around

You Are Miss Piggy

A total princess and diva, you're totally in charge - even if people don't know it.
You want to be loved, adored, and worshiped. And you won't settle for anything less.
You're going to be a total star, and you won't let any of the "little people" get in your way.
Just remember, piggy, never eat more than you can lift!

Newsy-news (no film at 11)

Well, the house on Brookfield Road has been sold, the deal closed Friday, money has been handed over, and I won't be going there anymore. It is a relief to have that finished (all the renovations, etc.), but at the same time, there is a strange sense that something is missing. This week was stressful, 'cause the deal was supposed to close tuesday, but things got confusing...

We are also trying to get ready for the big trip to Ontario next week for Todd's brother's wedding. We scrambled around the whole city Friday, looking for a roof rack and carrier that would fit my car and yet not cost more than the car itself. Finally ended up getting the rack at the Toyota dealership, at surprisingly less cost than expected. So, tomorrow, it's wash all the laundry and get it packed and stuffed into the car. Todd, Travis and Jamie are leaving for the Argentia ferry tomorrow night around 9pm. Caitlyn and I are flying to Montreal on Thursday afternoon. Then, after the wedding, we are going to see if we can visit Paul and Silvia for a night. Then, we head back east, stopping in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia along the way to Cape Breton. Gonna be a long drive... Boy, I hope we survive that! Eric's band is playing in a couple shows, so he will be allowed to stay home, on the condition that he takes proper care of the house and dogs. He will have some supervision - Todd's cousin lives just down the street, and will be dropping in randomly :o)

Anyway, Caitlyn has been smiling like crazy lately, and she's learning how to laugh. She sucks in a bit too much air when she laughs and ends up coughing and sneezing - it's funny! She is still the prettiest little girl in Newfoundland, by the way. And I am not biased!

Ok, Just One More (I promise)

You Are a Jelly Donut

So you're a little rounder than most folks - but it's only in the right places!
You maintain a clean exterior, even if you're all messy on the inside.
You think you're the best, and that's mostly true...
But remember, you're just an empty shell without your jelly!

Another BlogThing

Just for the heck of it, I followed the link from Mike's Blog to uncover my hidden talent. What do you think, is this me?
Your Hidden Talent

You are both very knowledgeable and creative.
You tend to be full of new ideas and potential - big potential.
Ideas like yours could change the world, if you build them.
As long as you don't stop working on your dreams, you'll get there.

It Runs in the Family

I have made a recent discovery while looking through some photos of Todd's family... I have scanned the relevant photos, and invite you to take a look and see if you can spot the particular trait Todd and his children have in common.

Item 1: Todd himself
Father Tongue

Item 2: First child
Son Tongue

Item 3: Second child
Daughter Tongue

I thought at first it was a weird coincidence, but now that Caitlyn is exhibiting the same trait, I know it's a genetic thing. These Inkpens are saucy!! Maybe I'll do more research, and see if any of the other Inkpens suffer from this genetic anomoly. I may even be able to track it's origins...

This Blog Shall Have No Title

Really, it's just bits and pieces of news, nothing all that important. So, Caitlyn's napping in her wind-up swing, Eric is at a friend's house, Travis is at work, Jamie is at "boot camp" and Todd is sanding the deck. It's my time to Blog! Sadly, I don't actually have all that much to say :o) I finally got to see the movie "The Corpse Bride"... it was enjoyable, but I don't think it was as good as "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (which I watched so many times I think I can do the whole dialogue, songs and all).

I have another picture to post today, Caitlyn and her Grampy...

They look pretty content together :o)

We have some sadness here, though - Kitty has been missing for about a week now. He went out one day, and just has not returned. We've called the shelters to let them know to keep an eye out for him, and today I guess I'll have to call the animal hospitals to see if anyone brought him in. I miss him! We've had him for about 10 years. Jamie is going to be very upset when he gets back from camp. All I can do is hope that Kitty finds his way home...

Well, I better try and grab some lunch while things are quiet here. And so, I bid you Adieu.

Jealousy is not pretty

I am envious - NanNan et. al. have gone camping! It's been ages since I've done any camping; I have a new tent, bought last year, and it has never even been put up! I want to go camping *stomp* *stomp* *stomp* It's just so much fun, having campfires, walking in the woods, swimming, relaxing away from phones. But, you know what my favorite part is? This:

An actual potty from Keji!

Anyway, hope NanNan and gang are having fun, and I look forward to the stories when she gets back :o) Posted by Picasa

My Boy's Done Growed Up!

My Hillbilly Name Is...

Bobbie Jean Walker

Jamie has left the nest (for the next two weeks, anyway) - and he almost did it without so much as a hug good-bye! Kyle's Mom had to holler at him to come back and say good-bye as he ran for the airport gate. ~Sigh~ See how happy he is?

Anyway, back to bed for me... Caitlyn was not particularly cooperative last night, and insisted on sleeping smack-dab in the middle of the big bed. I think she'll be a great form of birth control if this keeps up (not too much information, was that? hehehehe)

Piccy's, Part Deux

Hello, Blog-World! How exciting, to be here in the computer room, in front of my computer, with my computer all to myself! I am beside myself with happiness. Well, not literally beside myself, that would just be creepy :o) Anyway, I have the strangest sense that people want to see a few photos. . . Perhaps I will reveal a couple. But only after you have been forced to read tonight's blog in its entirety *mwa ha ha haaaaaa*

So, Jamie is off to cadet boot camp tomorrow morning. Here it is heading for midnight, and he's just putting his laundry in the dryer now. I am supposed to be helping him pack, and here I am, fooling around with the computer. We love to procrastinate - it adds a certain kind of spice to our lives :o) He'll be gone to Gagetown, NB, for two weeks. This will be the longest he's ever been away from home - I hope he does ok. I suppose I will spend the whole two weeks worrying, while he, on the other hand, will totally forget about me whilst doing the army thing. It should be fun for him - it's right up his alley, with all the sports and target shooting and mountain climbing and so on. I got him a little disposable camera, so I hope he gets some shots we can share when he gets back.

Caitlyn is still confused about the difference between night and day - she refused to go to sleep until 4am last night, and she's fussing like crazy right now. Poor Todd is getting frustrated 'cause he paid for a movie that he can't hear very well... Good thing she's cute!

Anyway, I should check on the progress of Jamie's packing, I guess. Man, we have to get up early tomorrow morning *ugh* Good night all :o)

Sneaking a minute in...

The competition here is getting stiff - way too many people want to use these computers (we have three in the house)! So, I have to sneak in here while the others are distracted with the baby *mwa ha ha ha ha* Speaking of Caitlyn, she had a very fussy day yesterday - she just got her first set of needles, one in each leg, and it ruined her whole day. Hopefully she'll feel better today.

It's cool and rainy today - finally can move around without getting soaked with sweat. Us old girls just can't handle the heat anymore!

Anyway, I better get back to the others before they notice I'm gone. Besides, I have to see if Todd is making breakfast yet ~smirk~

Canada Day Goings-on

It's sunny, warm and breezy - perfect for a Canada Day Bar-B-Que :o) Todd has invited a couple of his friends over, Eric and Jamie have their friends here, Travis' girlfriend is here - about 9 people! That's a huge crowd for me... generally, I prefer no people! How will I fit my nap in?!

Life is strange

Jamie and I were chatting today, and he said he still finds it so strange how things have changed so much, so quickly. He still remembers life before his Dad got sick, and how hard it was just after Max died; yet, here we are, in a completely new life, almost as if by magic. It's not just life that is strange, but the perception of time. Sometimes, for both Jamie and me, it seems like just yesterday that we were a family of four, with no idea of how easily everything can be turned upside down. Then we look at where we are now, and are amazed - we have a new house, a new baby, more people and dogs and relatives... We had no idea we'd end up here. Luckily, this seems to be a good place to be. Still, Jamie and I agree, we had to give up an awful lot to get to this place, and we can't help but wonder how life would be now if nothing had changed in the first place. For me, today in particular has been spent thinking about that... on June 28, 1986, Max and I were married. We knew we would be doing something really special for our 20th anniversary - but, here I am, one remembering for two. I hope where ever he is, he is remembering, too.

Stealing a minute

I am supposed to be over at Brookfield Road with Todd and Eric, but I sent them on ahead with the promise that I would go over when Caitlyn finishes her lunch. I lied!! I have been trying to get some computer time in, so since she's having her after-lunch snooze, I will take advantage, and steal a minute for myself :o) Oh, I have put some of the house renovation shots into my Yahoo photo album - just click on the folder called Renovations.
With any luck, the house will be ready within a week or so... It has been taking forever, and we are starting to feel the crunch - gotta get the thing sold!

Caitlyn has been a little fussier than usual the last couple days - she has a little Thrush in her mouth, so now she gets some yucky, really, really yellow liquid to take orally and then spit up onto everything in sight. Why, oh why, do they have to add such brilliant colours to baby medicines?! Obviously, none of the medicine makers have to clean up after spitty babies! Anywhy, other than that, she is doing fine, staying awake a little longer now after feeding, and looking around alot. The doctor says she is really alert for her "corrected" age (how old she would be now if she had been born at the proper time, which is about 3 weeks). She's just a smart little cookie :o)

Anyway, I better get ready to go help Todd and Eric - although I really don't feel like doing any work today. It is nice and sunny out, instead of wet and muggy, for the first time in days. I want to lay around in the sun, and smell the fresh cut grass of the neighbors' lawns (note: not our lawn, which cannot be called freshly cut by any stretch of the imagination!). Ah well, I've put it off long enough - time to go. Until later, mes amis :o)

Back from Burin and Busy as Ever

Lots going on here lately - Todd seems to think that nice weather means I should get out of bed and do "stuff"! We took a trip to the Burin Peninsula last weekend to visit Todd's parents for Father's Day; it was a decent trip, sunny and warm. The drive is only about three and a half hours, and we stopped halfway for a snack. Caitlyn seems to be a good traveller so far - hope so, 'cause we are supposed to go to Ontario in August for a wedding! It seems from this picture that she doesn't like travelling, but once the car gets moving, she calms right down...

Sorry that her eyes are closed in this shot - I don't think we've caught her with them open yet! Anyway, I will share a photo of the fabulous fish I caught while in Burin... boy, we had some good eating that night!

Well, gotta get back to work... Time to stuff Caitlyn back into her carrier and drag her and the boys over to the old house. I'll have some photos of the work in progress later on. See ya later!

Piccy's

To satisfy her clamouring, adoring audience, Caitlyn has graciously agreed to pose for a few candid photos...

Note the towel under her little head. That is a sad attempt to protect our bed from her unceasing spit up. She has just fed here, and is very much like a full water balloon - one false move, and she'll gush like Ol' Faithful. Another note: she is out like a light, and this was taken at 8:30 am. Why can't she be like this at 11:30 pm?! I'll have to take a picture of her during her late evening/night fussy-fit, so you can all see how one can go from beauty to the beast :o)

Let's take a closer look, shall we? You might be able to see a little spit up on her arm...

I snuck a shot of Todd relaxing (or is it collapsing) after trying to sooth a fussy Caitlyn last night. He doesn't look very comfortable to me, but each to his own, I guess :o)

Adventures with Baby

Warning: This blog contains graphic text describing bodily emissions, and may not be suitable for some audiences. Reader discretion is advised.

That having been said... Holy cow, can Caitlyn ever spit up! She's managed to hit just about every surface in the house, both horizontal and vertical. She sits in your lap looking all cute and innocent, but it's a trick, to lure you in closer for a kiss. Once you're in range, look out! She can shoot three streams at once by using her mouth and both nostrils. She can projectile spit-up a shockingly long distance. She can spit up completely silently, carefully waiting for the moment when you look away - as soon as your eyes leave her face, a strange, warm wetness flows all over your hands/arms/shoulder, etc. She can spit up with amazing accuracy, usually aiming for either the inside of her jammies, or the inside of your jammies - whichever will be the most disgusting and difficult to clean at that particular instance. She can aerosolize her spit up, so that your glasses are coated with a fine spray. She can spit up while simultaneously feeding. It's crazy, I tell you!

Other than that, she's awfully cute :o)

Speaking of houses...

So, just before going to bed, I check out the FamBlogs (our Family Blogs, for short). TravelingMan is back from Alberta with photos of the old homestead, and NanNan comments on how houses were once homes. I think to myself: I know that my house on Brookfield Road was a home for my family; as we are fixing it up for sale, I realize just how hard it will be to let it go. Of course, it was the first house I ever actually owned, so that probably makes it harder... Now we are learning how to turn this new house into a home, with a few extra people and animals thrown in to make it a real challenge. We have been in this house for almost four months now, and it is only recently that I am able to call it home - ie. "Let's drop in to Dairy Queen before we go home." I think it has been easier for Todd and Travis, because they didn't have the same association with their house as I and my boys did/do with ours. For us, the house on Brookfield Road feels like the only physical connection we have with Max - his hand was in every room of that house. Eric and Jamie both appreciated and were proud that their Dad had built their bedrooms specifically for them. As for myself, I feel reluctant to leave the place where I last saw Max alive, the place he so wanted to be when he drew his last breath. So, now I have to let go of the house, and learn to trust that Max is with me where ever I go. He did tell me that it's just a house - I should learn to listen to him!
Anyway, look what happens when I read an innocent comment! My crazy head is gonna get me into trouble one of these days :o) I better get on with my housework before I find something else to set me off...

It's Not Just Me

I found a little column in our weekly free paper, The Express that helped reassure me that I am not a crazy lady. Before Max died, I tended to think that people who claimed to receive "signs" from the dead were just a little wacko, you know, a biscuit or two short of a dozen. Since then, though, I have had experiences of my own that made me wonder. It was kind of nice to read this column and know that I am not entirely insane (or at least, not for this reason *wink*). Anyway, I will share it with you here:

Butterfly Kisses
After a lot of soul searching, I started asking "why" things were the way they were. At one point, I remember reading about life after death. In one book, it said if you want to connect with a passed loved one, it’s as simple as asking them to send you a sign. My mother had died when I was a child and I was desperate for some guidance. Half believing it would happen and half thinking I was losing my mind, I tried it. I asked Mom to send me a sign. I asked for a butterfly. No sooner did I think it when a large, loppy Monarch butterfly fluttered past me. Refusing to believe it was meant for me, I kept pushing my luck and upping my request until I finally asked for the impossible. I wanted a purple butterfly. If I didn’t get it, then without a doubt, it would confirm that no one ‘up there’ was listening. I didn’t get one. I got a cloud of them. Ever since, I get purple butterflies every time I need reassurance. It’s just one of those things in my life that has remained constant. To me, that’s one of my life’s little miracles.

So much to do...

I am supposed to be busy busy busy, but I am doing the best that I can to avoid my "chores"! I should be calling around looking for estimates on sanding and refinishing hardwood floors, then calling Toyota to get tires rotated, parts put back on (which I managed to knock off over the winter), and brakes looked at. I have laundry waiting to be washed, laundry waiting to be folded, and laundry waiting to be put away. I have a dishwasher waiting to be emptied, and a pile of dirty dishes waiting to go into the (currently full) dishwasher. I have a puddle of dog pee at the top of the stairs drying as I type. I haven't gotten dressed yet, and Caitlyn needs a bath. I have to unload my car so that I can drive over to the house on Brookfield Road and load it up again. I have a few plants dying in their containers waiting for me to plant them in the ground. All of this, and what am I doing? Why, I am sipping a nice cold Pepsi, flicking through other people's blogs, fooling around with my own :o) I really do have my priorities... just don't tell Todd! As Eric likes to say, "I'll procrastinate tomorrow..."

New Newest Driver and News

Well, now we are really in for it... Eric also has passed the written test, and has his beginners' permit to drive. I am worried this will turn into a big competition between the boys... you know, who can do what first, best, etc. Todd and I want to get them both set up in driver's ed, to spare ourselves the stress of having to teach them ourselves. Travis at least has had some experience starting a vehicle and shifting a standard, but poor Eric is a total newbie. I can see it now - Eric learning to get out of our driveway in my Matrix. I think it could look a little like this:

See? There's Eric, in the driver's seat, while my Matrix burns...

Anyway, I took Caitlyn to the breastfeeding clinic today - she has made it to the 7lb mark!! She is growing like crazy, which is nice to see. Right now, though, she has all these yucky little pimples all over her face. The nurse at the clinic says I have to leave them alone... I am terrible for picking at my children, and I don't know if I will be able to leave the poor baby alone! I will do my best, though.

I guess I might have exaggerated in the title of this little blog - there really isn't any more news. Each day blurs into the next, with no real discernable difference. But, like they say, no news is good news :o)

Newest driver in town

Well, Travis has passed the written test, and now has his beginner's drivers license. Let the games begin! He has been out a couple times in Todd's SUV (which has a standard transmission), and had a spin in his grandparents' car (automatic transmission). He likes theirs better, but if he wants driving time, he'll have to make do with the SUV. His ultimate goal is to drive my sporty 6-speed Matrix... *gulp* Luckily, he can't go anywhere by himself for the next year - legally, that is. Eric is studying the manual, and wants to write the test next week. Imagine, two 16 year olds learning to drive in the same house... What fun. Anyway, here's a shot of the happy Travis, keys in hand (with his Nan (Sharon) Inkpen):

The streets of St. John's will never be the same :o)

Beautifulest Baby Ever!

Heeeeeeeeere She Is - Miss "I don't know the difference between night and day" (sung to the tune of that stupid song they sing for Miss America) :
